Clinical guidelines change; clinics close or move; drug availability changes between countries; what is available to citizens of a jurisdiction may differ from what is available to foreign visitors. The 72-hour PEP window is a clinical fact that does not change, but the specific clinics that dispense PEP, their opening hours, their cost to non-citizens, and the specific antiretroviral regimens they use are all subject to change. In most of the jurisdictions covered here, violent crime against tourists is significantly lower than in comparable Western cities. The residual physical risks in adult-travel contexts include: drink-spiking (documented across the region, especially in tourist-facing bar districts); robbery associated with being in high-risk areas after dark; and situations in which a venue is controlled by organised crime and normal exit is difficult. The general principle across all jurisdictions is never enter a venue you cannot freely walk out of.
